About us

Serious Mischief Theatre Company was founded in 2014 by award winning physical theatre practitioner Jake England-Johns. Our work is fun, physical, full of integrity and has a twinkle in its eye!

Serious Mischief works with a core team of artists and collaborators to make vibrant contemporary circus theatre and dance that acts as a playful catalyst for reflection in our sometimes difficult world.

Often working outdoors, our shows are thought provoking and accessible as we harness the power of playfulness to promote unity for all. With roots in Bristol and Leeds we bring the mischief to all corners of the nation with commitments to audiences in the South West and Yorkshire particularly.

Jake England – Johns

Artistic Director, performer, and general mover of heavy objects

Jake started his theatre career after leaving Bretton Hall in 2005 and began making avant garde physical theatre with his first collaborative and Total Theatre Award winning company Chotto Ookii.
Since then he has trained in numerous circus, theatre, martial art and dance disciplines creating work that is always underpinned by movement techniques.

Wholeheartedly a people person Jake has always sought to bring laughter and honesty with him in his work. He feels that now more than ever we should be creating work that promotes tolerance and unity through playful engagement and direct participation…
